Here goes nothing

Having taught myself to swim in early 2010 i completed Hatfield Sprit Tri in July and decided Triathlon was the sport for me. As an individual i've never been one to do things by half and find jumping in at the deep end (literally!!) is the way forward in life. So one Olympic triathlon later and i decided it was time to get stuck in. Enter Ironman Switzerland and all the trial and tribulations that go with attempting to become an Ironman. My winter training has already posed some problems mainly that of swimming more than 400metres without a wetsuit and the fact i developed Planter fasciitis in my right foot and haven't been able to run more than 6 miles for the last four months!
With Spring on its way and the season getting underway i thought id Blog some of thats going on and how life goes as a Trainee Ironman. 49days until my first Triathlon of the season which is Lisbon International Tri in Portugal but they'll be a few discipline specific races thrown in before i would imagine....i will no doubt keep you posted.

Thursday

12/13 March

Nothing too special this weekend due to prior social commitments. Started off running with the Metres to miles crew for a steady 8.5 miles then straight out on the bike for 90 minutes. You gotta love the banter on a steady 60 minute run, my name is now apparently Liam (dont ask!) Sunday was a steady 60km over to watch everyone race Retford half. The plan was to ride over, run the half and ride back before going out for Lunch....wouldn't you know it first time ever they sold out and didn't accept on the day entries. Don't they know who i am!! On a cold wet and windy day i was extactic that after id finished the sun came out for a glorious day. Wouldn't you know it.

Wednesday

14/15/16/17 March

Got some steady training in on Monday and Tuesday. Swam for an hour on Monday and couldn't help but notice the guys and girls steadily plodding away at breaststroke whilst having a chinwag in the Swim lane. Was't to bust so i cracked on with my session. Managed 45k steady ride after work before heading to the track with the M2M group to do a steady 2 mile warm up the 7mile@6.52 min mile then a 1.5mile bends and straight session. Easy session it was supposed to be. Suppose it wasn't to taxing.
Wednesday saw me taking an unscheduled day off, due to the fact i had a scan on my foot and have plantar fibroma!! No wonder its been hurting when i run.
Managed 3.2km in 59 minutes in the pool this afternoon, my longest ever swim. I f your following the blog then you realise in a race between me and a brick in a pool...the brick would win!! Oh and the breaststroke brigade were out again. A whole pool and two women decide they want to use the swim lane to have a gossip in. Get a grip females some of use would like to become an Ironman at some stage in the near future!
Then out for a steady hours run with the Mrs to get her ready for Steelman Distance. I must remember to do some housework!

Monday

Reality sets in

So day to day blogging is impossible. Trying to fit in life, training and work as well as keeping a daily blog is something that cant be done.
Having said that i spent a week in Mallorca since i last posted and got some decent training in. Clocking over 500km on the bike including a 96kph decent which is my fastest speed to date on a bike and also a near death experience being hit by a bus cornering a hairpin bend!!!.
One of my dislikes in the world is Coffee, so for some strange reason my Spanish managed to stretch to "Uno cafe americano por for vour " nice i can order straight black coffee! and on the last day i learn that tea is pronounces Te not rocket science! The swimming out there was just as good and managed to don the wetsuit a few times for a few laps of the bay. Its always nice to share the sea with migrating jelly fish! I d recommend Mallorca to anyone wanting to get away training for a while. Puerto Pollenca is ideally located for coastal or mountain rides.

Sunday

Return home

So leaving a Triathletes paradise to come back home was hard work in itself, but back i came and straight in to the mundane action of a 2.4km pool swim surrounded by the blue rinse brigade insisting on swimming across my line. There should be some form of 'Ironman in Training' lane at all pools. Decided its time to shelve the road bike at put some miles in on the TT bike. Off to Lincoln i went..Hoping to get over there to run the 10km i arrived to a sea of 5500 people and decided against it. I must say i invested in a new Adamo seat and it works a dream. The first time i have ever rode 2hrs in aero position and got off feeling like im still a man!

Saturday

To The Doctors

So for the last 6 months ive had a number of injuries to my right foot. From plantar fasciitis came a plantar fibroma. This has been in the heel of my foot causing loads of pain throughout my training, so much so that my 11hour goal time has dropped to just completing the event. Having seen 3 specialists and a surgeon Wednesday brought action!!! I had a needle full of cortisone injected in to my foot. Im off running and cycling till Sunday but will be back swimming tomorrow after a 48hr rest.
Giving the TLI cycling event a go on Sunday. Should be a laugh. Less than 3 weeks until Lisbon Half Ironman also. The season is well at truly at kick off time!

Friday

Who needs Quacks!

Showing total disregard for the doctors recommendation, which may or may not be a wise move. I decided i couldn't miss another gorgeous day without being on the bike. So out i went and rode an easy 3hours 20mins in the aero position on my TT bike. I have read numerous forums and message boards about the discussions if one should train on the TT bike over getting the miles in on the Roadie bike. Today my question was answered. For all those doing half iron distance or longer train in the aero position!! There is no substitute.
Having got home i was all ready to put on the running trainers but on closer inspection on my bruised/swollen foot i decided against it. Already pulled the docs pants down no need to insert as well!!!!

Thursday

TLI Race

I raced in the Ray levers memorial TLI race on Sunday, 7 laps adding up to 33 miles in total. I was put in the scratch group to which my initial thoughts (as with anything) was in for a penny how hard can it be. It was only after the 7th guy laughed at me and wished me luck i seriously began to question this. "Its death on wheels" i was duly told by a guy in group 1. He was correct. The plan was a steady ride there race and a steady recovery ride home. The plan didn't come to fruition. It was all good up until the end of the steady ride there. Off we went in the scratch group straight in to a 50kph train. No easing in to it no steady progression. After 5 laps or 24 miles my legs gave up, my brain was screaming to catch the group but i just couldn't put in any more effort and bonked big time. Hey ho it was a great laugh and i got home and entered the entire series.Good times.
On a downer i had to can tonights run/swim as i did myself a mischief on my back at work. Hope its better for tomorrow.

Monday

Since Wednesday

OK so i had to have a couple of impromptu rest days due to my over exertion at work. Not a massive set back as i managed to get a few jobs done around the place which have been bugging me for sometime. Off to the Physio i tootled on Wednesday to the good news of Ligament damage in my back...Dont worry though the pain is your pain and wont get worse, Your safe to train are the god like words trickling from her lips. Out for a 9 miler on Wednesday night which felt comfortable and no pain from any aspect of me, comfortable and done in 61minutes...2 days off may have helped. Into Thursday saw me out for a 50mile ride on the TT bike and a 30 minute shake out run to follow. Nutrition is a major key to this and i got in wrong throughout the whole day, lack of hydration also, schoolboy error this far in to training. Friday saw a tempo 4.9miler in 29minutes and a steady 1.2km in the pool.........Did i ever tell you the story about the idiots in the lane swim section!!!! Read every other post and it'll be in there TURDS i am an Ironman in training GET OUT OF MY LANE and save the breaststroke for when you see your girlfriend!

Sunday

Saturday comes

Out for a an easy 10miler which im aiming for race pace at with no dramas except it was absolutely redders and i was blinded by my own sweat...NICE.
Over to Broughton Bridge in the PM for a steady dip in the Ancholme with a few Lincsquad lad. First on site Dave H and Rob.....Legends. Rob spent more time draining water from his kayak than anything else, maybe apart from developing cramp and needing rescuing from Dave.
Having never been to Broughton before i was in the dark with reference to distances. "Dave how fars what round here" the reply "Next bridge and back just under a mile" Cool Half Ironman in a few weeks it'll be a good little tester. Off i go thinking everyones in tow boom...that was mistake number 1, no one followed me. Back i came thinking that wasn't so bad only 0.2 of a mile to add and thats half distance. Boom mistake 2...Never listen to Dave H with regards to distance cos he knows some guy in a kayak wi a GPS paddled it once!!! On my reture we have a Lincsquad gang and Rob is still loving capsizing in his new kayak! 2.65km covered on the swim. A Great session Cheers Gang.

Saturday

Rollercoaster Ride

On Monday it was all over, my back was done in, Portugal was a couple of weeks away and there was no way i could think of competing in any sort of event. What a difference a week makes. Sitting here having rode 58miles averaging over 20mph and then getting straight out for a couple of miles on my feet 6.45 min/miling after a Saturday long run and open water swim, all is good in the world. Im optimistic about Portugal and the only thing concerning me is not to overdo it as after all it is a training race. So with everything going in the right direction its time to eat some salmon!

Wednesday

Rollercoaster Ride Part 2

Up,Down, Up, Down What the fuck!!! Managed to get a parasitic bug from swimming in the river. Not trained since Tuesday which was a tough session from Doggers car park in Donny. I train in all the right places!! session was 20 min warm up 1x mile rep 4x 1/2 mile reps 1xmile rep to finish at 5.05min/miling 20 min cool down Like i said tough but fun. Been put on antibiotics so not training until i arrive in Lisbon.Couldn't think of worse race prep. Lost 5lbs to date, least ill be a good race weight!

Sunday

First race of the season

All i managed before i went to Lisbon to compete in the Half Ironman was a steady 35mile ride which confirmed i was weak due to my little bug friends. We flew in to Lisbon on Wednesday with me still on Antibiotics....Winning race prep for sure!
Lisbon was red hot and i wasn't particularly looking forward to Saturdays race day. Thursday and Friday were spent on a training swim, ride and run checking that all my kit and myself were functioning!! Saturday Morning came and i took a steady stroll down to transition to rack my bike and layout my kit. Reminding myself that the race was a training race in preparation for Ironman i went down to the Swim start to get my season underway. This is where the fight started, I say fight i have been in less brutal fights than that swim! It took a few good kicks and 800m to get in to a decent rhythm but once i had some space i eased through the swim which had been extended to 2.06km in 40.12 goal time of 37min but i didn't expect the brawl at the start so happy with that. A long 500m run to my bike and i was out of transition in 4.35 probably a bit long but it was a long run from the swim to get my bike so i was still smiling at this point. On the bike and the plan was to keep to my nutritional goal and spin through keeping it as easy as possible, I was impressed at how well i felt on the ride even though it absolutely hammered it down with rain but then hey skins waterproof! Stopped off for a pee stop and then off the bike in 2hrs42 with a goal time 2hrs48 and feeling fresh i was enjoying myself. In to and out of T2 in 2.24 as i didn't have lock laces and my fingers didnt work at this point (lesson learned!!) Picking up the run i felt great. The first 2 of the 4 laps went by easily, 6.40min miling and going well, the 3rd lap came and just kept on going, It felt like i was running with lead in my legs. A quiet word with myself after seeing the Garmin on 7.40min/miling  and i pushed it back down to under 6.50min/miling to run an 89min half marathon 91minute goal time so all in all a finishing time of 4hrs58min27sec. Happy Days im in the Sub 5hrs Club on my 1st race and i loved it. Next stop Beaver HIM in 4weeks!!

Tuesday

Back to training

Not as easy as it sounds, turns out a half ironman is quite taxing on your body....who'd of thought it. Had the usual Monday off the went out for a steady 90 minute run on Tuesday with all intentions of going to the pool after. That didn't happen, i had to go home and eat. I have been constantly hungry since i finished racing. Another downside, well i do enjoy food so we'll say thats an upside. Wednesday brought an hours swim session followed by an hours run, again steady just trying to aid recovery. Tonight is Thursday and im knackered. Active recovery is one thing but killing myself before i massive weekends training is another. Im thinking the bigger picture here....Need to look good for the Sportive photos don't i!!!!!!!!!

Thursday

A Long Weekend!

Nothing much to write home about today. Got a good weekends training in doing a 14mile run/10 mile ride/ 4mile run on the Saturday and the the 100+mile sportive on Sunday all done with relative ease and happily took Monday off. Watched Wouter Weylandt crash and die on stage 3 of the Giro D'Italia and it hit home as much as i enjoy what i do always ride safe. Ended today (Tuesday) with a trip to doggers for 8x 1/2mile intervals. Starting to tone the speed work down and increase the mileage. I need to increase my swimming if im honest. Better get to it!

Wednesday

Repetative

Its all getting a bit same old, same old training wise. I still get thredders with the old girts at the pool, i still put on my trainers and run come rain or shine, i still climb into the saddle to roll the miles out and i still constantly feel knackered. Ahh well its all for a purpose. Got the Beaver HIM coming up in 2 weeks so i have promised myself a paced race. That means sticking to my plan......Bet i dont! Something somewhere will go Pete Tong. Got a decent brick session in on sat 20k ride/20k run/20k ride/10km run getting some of the foot pain back so considering another cortisone to take the edge off. We'll see!!

Saturday

Im Back

Im back online after busting my laptop. So what have i been up to??? Training and racing. I upped my mileage on the bike and started open water swim sessions at Tyram Hall. Everything seems to slowly be coming together with about 6 weeks to go. I still think i need to ride more. Im managing 80-100miles on my long rides but would like to up that 10- 20%.
I completed my 2nd race of the season. The Beaver middle distance tri. Had a brilliant day even though it pissed it down and was windy as hell! all adds to the experience.
The swim was poor with really shallow water, silty as and i managed to catch my arm in the buoy netting, glad to get out of there and up the 450metre transition run in 43 minutes. Not to fussed about the time as the run adds a chunk of time on. in and out of T1 in 3.30 or thereabouts. Inclament weather meaning time added on for putting extra bits of kit on. Out on the bike and taking it easy into the wind and rain feeling comfortable up and down the hills until my seat mounted bottle cages dropped off. Nightmare, should i leave them and get them later or stop and get them now. A quick cost calculation made the loss at around £100 time to stop, turn around and shove the lot down my tri suit. So im unable to get aero for the last few miles and lose more than a few minutes pissing around. Finally arriving in T2 after a ride of 2.24 a faster turnaround in T2 and out on the 4 lap run.
I was told the run was flat, how wrong they were. I ran within myself chatting to whomever i could to check my breathing was ok, kept my nutrtion going and crossed the line in 4.44.41. Happy days, testing but happily raced within myself throughout.
A plan is coming together.

Oh yea and get donating (link in top right corner) tight gits!!!!! ha

Wednesday

The time Approaches

Its getting close. 5 weeks to go until race day! Managed to pick training up after The Beaver straight away, steady recover run on Monday then on to the track for 5x800 6x400m reps on Tuesday. Steady ride on Wednesday then 95mile ride on Thursday. Rode 11mile to the gym for a 2k swim then rode back. Saturday was a 3k OW Swim. Helped out at Owsten Ferry 10km on Sunday which is a top event and will be entering next year but this meant training went out the window. A quick session change switched my rest day from Monday to Sunday and rode 170km with a 3.2km run today after work!
So at the minute this is just me listing sessions that i have done but to be honest im hooped. The roads are still shit, drivers are still stupid and training for an Ironman after being a triathlete for 11 months and a winter off injured is still nails. Ill try and be slightly more humorous in the future but not today a sweet cheeks!

Tuesday

Getting closer

He's only gone and done himself a mischief!!!! opposite foot and its knackered so im doing not a lot this week. Rode to cleggy and back last monday and clocked 170km with a short run after it and felt well. ticked over on Tuesday and Wednesday with a sore foot and rode the TLI Harworth race on Thursday fininshing 5th and managing a breakaway to boot. Race report on the NMRRL.org.uk website. So after that i swam the 3.8km distance on Saturday and got a short 45mile ride in after it. Got up Sunday and did a 2hr run with the M2M group and killed my foot. I thought it was better...it wasn't!!! so now im taking it easy did a km in the pool before the mongs that inhabit the water a 3pm on Wednesday broke me and i had to leave. Hoping to get out for race2 in the series tomorrow so we'll see how the foot feels. To be honest its only running that causes pain. There is no doubt i will still be running come race day this is just...............an early taper shall we say! well thats what i say anyway.

Monday

Steady Away

Taking it easy to see how the foot goes along. Got in a few 40ish mile rides few short runs and a few more swim sessions. Just ticking it all over so not to aggravate the injury before race day. Picked up my new Tri Suit from the guys at M2M the other day and its spot on. They helped me no end in my months of training with kit/advice and coaching from Coach T. If i could stay injury free i have a feeling id be alright at this Triathlon thing, or at least the running side of things! I still seem to be a god dam brick in the pool and no matter when and or where you go a swimming pool is always full of old, overweight people who have no concept of swim speed. Does anyone know of a way to get around this?? or is it just a time old mystery of life that fat old people have nothing else to do in life but swim. i will one day be one of those people and make it my job to hinder those faster and slender than myself!!!!

Friday

Ready to roll

I realise i have dropped off writing my blog but there is a reason for it. Maybe even two. The main reason being i believe im developing anger issues, many will say i have always had anger issues but this is news to me!!! reading through and reliving my trips to the pool, my incidents with motorist whilst out on the bike and wishing i could get away with slitting a throat or two then out running with little runts shouting at you to get a shift on or go faster! little shits will go faster when i kick em in the head!! Anyway the point is i felt my anger issues repeating through my blog and didn't think it would be good reading for you usual blog reader. Another reason is the general repetitiveness of training and being injured. Training from scratch for an Ironman is hard work. Once a base has been established im sure it can only get easier but going from a couple of hours a week training to 15-20hours a week  is certainly a shock to the system and i believe why i have been injured so much throughout the ordeal. Never the less im ready. Not in peak condition, i still have a foot injury and i have had to readjust my targets but as an ex soldier im using this as a recce im going to enjoy it and then prepare for IMWA!!!!
So training wise i have been winding down, 30mile race Thursday few swims hour ride Friday and 70minutes today, time to pack up the bike and wash my tri suit before beginning to pack. See you on the other side.

Thursday

Race Done

After months of training it was time to make the trip over the Pennines to Manchester Airport as the beginning of the end approached. The journey to become an Ironman would be over as raceday was in 3 days time. So arriving at the airport we made our way to check in with paperwork in hand to be greeted by the welcoming checkin girl, handing said paperwork over the happy go lucky girl informed us that our flight had departed 3hours prior to our arrival!!!! Hmmm this put us in a bit of a pickle, booking through Nirvana to take all the stress out of the journey there i stood stress levels increasing rapidly. A couple of quick phone calls and a very very helpful Jonathan at Nirvana and we were on the move from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 where i was assured he had checked us in on line but we'd need to cover the cost of the bikes. No dramas, into Terminal 1 to checkin a quick brief to the lady at the desk who nodded in agreement that she knew all about my predicament and all that needed to happed was to pay for our bikes to be transported over at the 'Help Desk'. Help my arse. I walked over and again explained my situation to a so called woman behind the desk, may have been a man who knows either way i was there to pay and be polite. She assured me she knew of who i was and that i had to pay for my bikes, Brilliant were all singing off the same song sheet. Oh Wait she declares 'computer says no'  im sorry we had this sorted myself and 3 others were to bored the plane mit 2 bikes and all that needed to be done was pay for the bikes to be taken. Computer says HK not HB it needs to say HB i dont know what HK means. So by this point lise is laughing at me as i attempt not to be one of those over enthusiastic passengers off airport documentaries, This thing behind the counter which i cant bring myself to charm(its like an inbuilt safety feature i have to horrible chicks!!) carries on by saying i need to speak to cargo about it. No dramas how can i contact cargo, whats that you can do it. In my head I was yelling ‘well f@#kin do it you dizzy cow’ but I politely asked for her help on the matter in hand and contact cargo……£320 for your bikes and they’ll be there in 3-5 days because your not travelling with your bike!! I KNOW im not travelling with my bike you wont let me. Time for another call to Nirvana who after a five minute wait managed to get the computer to change at which the thing behind the desk was only to happy to let me pay for our bikes  and see us on our way.  If I see her again ill send her to cargo!! And so we boarded our flight with only a 30 minute delay. At this point I have to say Nirvana were awesome, after reading the small print I realised they had no obligation to get us on another flight but did so only at the cost of our bikes!
Arriving in Zurich the transfers to the Hotel was seamless and this reassured us why we’d paid a little extra to have the hassle removes. The other thing that struck me was it was boiling hot! This was to be the constant, even when it chucked it down with thunder  so loud the vibrations set off all the alarms at the car garage it was still red hot, 4am….red hot, you get my jist.
Friday was registration day and again we were shuttled to the event site and for once in my life I was gobsmacked. The Expo was huge, shops for everything you could possibly imagine, bike porn that would be classed as the playboy of bikes., and everything on the edge of a crystal clear lake where you could swim without a swarm of Health and Safety signatures and cosignatures and NOK Details. A few laps of the expo and an abundance of freebies later and it was clear that the entry fee for Ironman was wasted. After registering we took the bikes out for a pre race set up check just to make sure id have no excuses come race day.
Sunday came after a relaxing Saturday, after racking on Saturday at which point a photo was taken of me, my bike and my helmet for security reasons which was referred to on a database when I came to leave after the event (Added for you Paul). A nervous set up of my transition area and off down to the swim start we went. Back, left was the advice for the slow lads on the swim so Back, left it was. Thing is the back left soon became the middle as everyone had the same idea!! So the plan changed, after the Swiss national anthem the pros were off and it was decided to count to 5 after the claxon so we’d be at the back………Off the claxon went and no one behind us moved they all had the same plan, ohhhhh f#*k it off I went in to the fist throwing, elbow dropping, kung fu kicking 3.8 km swim. To me this would be the worst bit of the day, my plan was always just to get through it and if I had to put a time on it 1hr20 would have been it which I arrives at by doubling my HIM time and adding a couple of minutes. The swiss passenger boats paid little regard to the swimmers creating huge wave which were a good laugh trying to swim through and exiting the swim in 1.21 and dishing out more digs than I received I was happy.
In and out of a steady T1 making sure I had all bases covered and out onto the bike, I dropped my rear mounted water bottle after 4km nice but other than that one word…Beautiful. An amazing route lined by thousands of people all the way round..Hopp Hopp Hopp everywhere you pedalled. I passed two blokes, bikes trashed on spinal boards and neck brace and random people sat head in hand crying as their Ironman had come to an end be it by lack of preparation or crashing out. Spinning comfortably through my first 90km lap I encountered my first issue on the bike. I carry my nutrition in a pocketed race belt. Never in training had my bars melted together to create a mush of wrappers and bars ..nightmare, nothing I could do except grab nutrition at the feed stations so I went from eating every 15 minutes to every 35-40ish. Climbing the beast for the second time to shouts of ‘kill the beast’ was a lot harder than the first and I realised my aero helmet wasn’t the right choice on a red hot day as I was literally dripping with sweat. With 40km to go I noticed I had stopped sweating, not a good sign. I felt OK but knew that its one of the first signs of heat stroke so I eased ever so slightly on the bike. 10km down the road and I made a wrong turn on a clearly signed/marshelled turn and I blamed the guy in front who it turned out wasn’t part of the race. This was another small sign I was losing concentration. Just a few KM to push and id be sub 6hrs on a 184.2km ride having aimed for a 5.50 at 180km  id be happy with 6hrs still leaving my with a sub 11hrs goal coming in with 6.01 I was pleased.
Into T2 where a fellow athlete quickly asked to borrow my Vaseline, you sure mate theres only 1 place that’s been as he dug into my tub of vas and I couldn’t help but laugh.
Out onto the run in searing heat and after 3km I was averaging 7min/mile far to quick. 7.55min/mile and a 3hrs30 marathon and a sub 11hrs would suit me fine all things considered. My foot was killing due to tendonitis and I soon realised that a marathon after a swim/bike like that cant be bluffed. I think I could bluff a marathon but this just couldn’t be done. So at 21km I was hitting my goal the heavens opened and cooled us all off and all was well in the world. I had a word with my foot and told it the only way its stopping is when it crosses the finish line and so we worked in a painful harmony . 22km came and as I don’t do things by half I ran up to the hall and not content with hitting it I headbutted that thing so hard it sent me dizzy and forced me to re evaluate my times. Decision time, do I continue and risk passing out but if I don’t pass out ill be a sub 11 Ironman or do I slow down and make sure I become an Ironman. As I write this an ironman you know my choice, I chose then and there become an Ironman today and next time run myself into the abyss if necessary to hit my ‘A’ time. With a ‘B’ time of under 12hrs and a ‘c’ goal of finishing I was happy crossing the line to hear “Lewis Purcell you are an Ironman” to which I had a beer and was duly drunk. So on my 28th birthday with a 4.01 run 30min outside my target run time and in 11hrs33min  I became an Ironman and will be rescheduling my birthday for a date when I can sit down, chill out and have a beer. Not swim bike run the hardest triathlon I have ever done(out of the whole 6 I have done!!!)
